This film can't decide what genre it's supposed to be. The writers spent too much time trying to make Seth Rogen funny - which is wasted time because he already IS funny - and not enough time writing a decent story. There's a couple of fun moments but this was not nearly as comical as the theatrical previews made it look. By the time the last 15 minutes came 'round I was watching the clock as it was dragging to the inevitable conclusion. This cast and the premise of an inept, immature buffoon stealing the lime light along with an ingenious, talented and deadly sidekick who gets no credit could have been wickedly funny. Somehow they missed the mark.

Cameron Diaz plays Christina, a woman who's in denial of fearing commitment. Her room-mates Courtney and Jane, played by Christina Applegate and Selma Blair, are also in the same predicament.

They go to a dance club and Christina grabs into Peter, played by Thomas Jane. Sensing chemistry without getting the whole story, Christina and Courtney take a road trip to find him.

The commercial for this movie makes it look like a chick flick; but, in reality, it's more of a female skin fest, featuring Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate in very skimpy outfits.

I couldn't quite figure out why this movie is rated R. Scary Movie (the first one) had grosser humor in it than this and it was rated PG-13.

The storyline gets a bit erratic at times. The film editor seems to be a bit asleep at the wheel. It does have it's funny moments, including a... uhhh, tonsil piercing of sorts. ;)

Pre-movie warnings: VERY brief nudity (male butt cheeks), profanity, a truckload of innuendo, ladies' room groping, some off-key singing on Cameron's part, and the re-immergence of the acting career of Jason Bateman (don't ask me why).

A semi-decent matinee date movie; but, I wouldn't shell out the night time bucks on this one.

Any Given Sunday (Special Edition Director's Cut) (Snap Case Packaging) (DVD)
By Al Pacino

Any Given Sunday is Oliver Stone's expose of football, and more importantly the lives of the men that experience it. This hard hitting drama runs at almost 3 hours, and not a minute is wasted. The cast is all-star and cast perfectly. This movie proved to me that Lawrence Taylor can act, as he has the most powerful scene in the movie in the shower room. The Any Given Sunday DVD is very simple for such a great movie. The only extras are a documentary, a trailer, and a music video. There is also some extra footage thrown in. Although lacking features, sound makes up for the lack of extras. If you got a nice sound system, you will feel like you're right in the game, with every hit and crunch. If you are a DVD sound-junkie, then this one is for you.

The Box [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)

My friend and I spent some considerable discussion time trying to find reasons for so many poor reviews for this film. There is one thing we both agree on: The Box is an auditory focused film. In fact, with only minor adjustments to the script, it would make a great radio play. So, unless you are committed to paying a great deal of attention to every word spoken, you are bound to get lost and confused by the complex plot. In these times of short attention spans, this is an obstacle the film makers may not have taken into consideration... Pity, as the film is actually quite original and the story intriguing.

The Box is based on a 1970 short story "Button, Button" by Richard Matheson (also the author of the celebrated "I Am Legend"). A financially overextended middle class couple receives a package containing a box with a button. A strange and grossly disfigured man later visits their house and explains should they choose to press the button, they will receive $1mil, tax free. The drawback? Someone they do not know will die. The couple's actions following the man's visit, as well as the consequences of their actions, constitute the meat of the story. The why's and the who's are mostly explained, though some questions are purposefully left for each viewer's imagination to tackle. The performance is satisfactory from all leads, except Cameron Diaz. She overacts in every scene, to the point of becoming a distraction. Her casting played a major part in my downgrading the rating to 3.5 stars.

If you feel you can ignore Diaz and focus on every word of dialogue, you will be rewarded with some original thinking and a somewhat creepy film. I was entertained.

The Box

The Box (DVD)
By Cameron Diaz

THE BOX is a masterpiece of ethical and moral dilemma masquerading as an ominous sci-fi suspense thriller. It may seem obscure and incomprehensible, but it's essentially just a story about the Golden Rule: What we do to others we do to ourselves.
The story is taken form an ironic little gem of a story by Richard Matheson (of TWILIGHT ZONE fame) called "Button, Button." The movie expands it into a Gordian Knot of obscure, seemingly unrelated events that inevitably, well... you'll see.
The central theme is altruism, which is basically the practical application of the Golden Rule (you know, do unto others as you would have them do unto you). The basic equation is that if enough people choose selfishness, eventually no one will be left. Yet I'm amazed by all the diverse interpretations and reviews, especially since the substance of the story is clearly stated at one point as the "altruism coefficient," that is, unless people learn to be altruistic they will either destroy each other or be destroyed by the mysterious extraterrestrials. A not uncommon sci-fi theme, but presented here as a brilliantly enigmatic and ominous fable that is never boring, but rather, perplexing and mesmerizing. It may have been more popular as a dark comedy, but then it would have lost much of its impact.
Unfortunately however, when a story is presented as enigmatically as this, people tend to see what they want to see, like the reviewer who totally misinterpreted it as a "scathing attack on altruism," quoting Ayn Rand's absurd, distorted definition of it. (Ayn Rand, the master of rationalization of the selfish and self-serving, nursed a lifelong disdain of altruism and empathy. Her books rationalize and justify selfishness, opportunism and exploitation, and still inspire those who exalt such traits.

This was truly an excellent film. This movie is Oliver Stone's best since Platoon. The fast-moving and dizzying cinemaphotography fits the high adrenaline atmosphere of the professional football world well. The film is also perfectly cast. Pacino gives life to the head coach, and Cameron Diaz's clearly most intense role as the team's owner is believeable. James Woods gives an excellent performance as the team doctor, who doesn't really seem to care about anyone but himself. Jamie Foxx has a breakthrough dramatic role as the new hotshot quarterback, whose ritualistic vomiting adds humor to the movie. With his performance, we find out Foxx really can act. LL Cool J, also puts through a convincing performance as the team's running back. Dennis Quaid doesn't really do much as the former QB with injury problems except help to develop Pacino's character. An outstanding cast, that features Charlton Heston as the football comissioner, and Ann-Margaret as Cameron Diaz's alcoholic mother. Former pro football players Jim Brown and Lawrence Taylor pop up as members of the team. I recommend it highly. This is possibly the best sports movie ever made.

What Happens in Vegas (Extended Jackpot Edition + Digital Copy) (DVD)
By Cameron Diaz

Two people down on life do what losers do. Jack (Kutcher) is a grown up adolescent who just got fired by his own father. Joy (Diaz) is a control freak who just got dumped by her fiancé - in front of all her friends.

Naturally, the two dimwits think going to Vegas will solve all their problems. What follows is pure Britney Spears - they get trashed, party, and do incredibly stupid things. Awaking the next morning, they learn one of the stupid things was a drunken marriage. No longer inebriated, they agree that the marriage was a mistake, and after a brief argument, they agree to an annulment. Moments later Jack uses Joy's quarter and wins 3 million dollars. Naturally, they argue over ownership, and the wacky paint-by-numbers script ensues.

Considering that I find Kutcher and Diaz two of the less appealing stars in Hollywood, the movie didn't have a great chance of impressing me. The two stars were OK at best, providing a few chuckles along the way. Luckily, however, Jack and Joy's best friends who tagged along to Vegas were hilarious. Their constant banter, asinine behavior, and hatred for one another provide the only real hard laughs of the entire movie. Anyone who walks away from this movie without laughing at their "junk punch" scene doesn't have a sense of humor.

If it weren't for the co-stars, this would be a two-star snoozer for the most part. Much like actual gambling in Vegas, however, there are times when a lucky person rubs off on another. The friends in this movie are the lucky streak and overall I'd recommend it as a light comedy.

This is a funny "no brainer" movie with a sweet ending. You don't have to think about the plot, it is very predictable. Just relax and enjoy the slap stick humor. This is a good movie to watch after a hard day of work with a couple beers and some popcorn. It will make you laugh and you don't have to bring your brain. This would be a great first date movie too.

I cant beleive im the first person to review this film. Its so about time it was released on DVD. Well Art House movies dont always get my attention but this flick is brilliant. Harvey Keitel and Cameron Diaz dazzle in the story about a high profile judge who weds a previous defendant in one of his court cases, though she is at least 30 years his junior!! Things just seem to get tougher for Diaz as the movie goes on to hide her ex (dead)lover in their house on a beautiful island off the Boston coast.
The scenery is fantastic, the acting superb, this movie will take you away from the everyday. Soundtrack is excellent. Enjoy

Okay, so sue me; I laughed a lot while watching this movie. My wife said that the film was horribly stupid but I didn't care. Sure, it was predictable beyond belief but why would you expect anything but a predictable romantic comedy? I mean, yes, at times the humor was a little off color or just plain ridiculous, but in a world embracing the comedic genius that is Judd Apatow (don't get me wrong, this is no where near as good as an Apatow production) why would you get mad over that?

`What Happens in Vegas' is exactly what you'd expect from a comedy starring Aston Kutcher.

The film tells the story of control freak Joy and slacker Jack. Joy was just dumped by her fiancé and Jack was just fired by his own father. When all goes wrong the only viable option is to go crazy in Vegas, so that is what they decide to do. It is in Vegas where they meet and get drunk and get hitched only to wake up desperate to end their relationship; that is until Jack wins $3,000,000 with Joy's quarter and each wants the cash. What happens next is highly unlikely (very highly) but for the sake of the film we'll follow along. A judge sentences them to a half year of marriage before either of them can be awarded the money. Jack and Joy are thus forced to live together and `work on their marriage' in order to attain the cast they so desperately desire.

The pot shots taken are over-the-top at times, but funny none-the-less. The situation is more preposterous than any of the jokes, and the actions taken by the two main characters, as immature as they are, are believable when you take into context the nature of the characters they are playing.

I mean seriously, a lot of people are that stupid.

Cameron Diaz is above this, I will say that.

Bad Teacher (Unrated Edition) (DVD)

I really, really wanted to like this film - even a little bit - as I paid top dollar to see it in the theater, but it was so 'bad' that I felt compelled to warn off others. "Bad Teacher" is simply one of those films that could have been better, but because it was so bad, it would be tough to know where to start fixing it.

Cameron Diaz plays a character with no depth (not surprising or even a negative for this genre of films...), no like-ability and yes, she's a bad teacher too - thus the name of the film. Supporting cast including Justin Timberlake as a cute, rich, but nerdy co-teacher, are good enough, but you keep hoping for better and never get it. The story too is so simple, it really doesn't allow any of the characters to be built into much more than sketches of ideas versus characters you want to either loathe or cheer for in the end.

One scene where Diaz's character redeems herself is cute, but the film neither offered up enough of those moments or really funny ones to make this viewer even slightly happy. I stuck it out and watched the whole thing, but while a fan of stupid comedies and the actors in the film, if this was the only choice I had for something to watch - I'd read a book.
